About RetURN.org

RetURN.org helps families understand their options for cremated remains, find organizations that can help, and permanently identify remains with a RetURN.org ID. It's an initiative of Buried in Work Charitable and the Cremation Association of North America, and the website is operated by Buried in Work (“we” in these terms). Reading the site and searching the directory are free.

We're not a funeral provider

RetURN.org doesn't take custody of, transport, store, scatter, bury or otherwise dispose of human remains, and isn't a funeral establishment. The directory lists independent providers. Any service you arrange is strictly between you and that provider.

No professional advice

Information on RetURN.org is general and educational. It isn't legal, medical, financial or other professional advice. Laws about cremated remains and who may decide what happens to them vary by state and circumstance. If you're unsure whether you have the authority to act, ask the provider or an appropriate professional first.

Your account

• You need an account to activate an ID and manage its page. Give us a real email address, keep your password to yourself, and tell us if you think someone else has used your account.
• You're responsible for what happens in your account. You must be at least 18 to open one.
• We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or puts the site or other people at risk.

RetURN.org IDs

A RetURN.org ID is a permanent identifier for one set of cremated remains. It comes on a label, an engraving or built into an urn, and links to a page anyone can open by scanning it or typing the ID.

• Activation. To activate an ID you need the ID and the activation code that came with it. Activation costs $19.99, paid at the Buried in Work shop, and the ID switches on once your payment goes through. A RetURN.org ID bought from the shop for $29.99 already includes activation, so you won't be charged again.
• Only activate an ID you have the right to. Activate an ID only for remains you're responsible for, or with the permission of the person who is. If there's a dispute about an ID, we may pause its page while it's resolved.
• The page is public. Whatever you put on an ID's page can be seen by anyone who scans it. Our Privacy Policy explains exactly what's shown.
• The page is meant to last. We intend each activated ID's page to stay online for as long as RetURN.org exists, so that anyone who finds the remains in future can learn who they are.
• Replacements. If a label is lost or damaged, contact us. An old ID can be pointed at its replacement so an earlier scan still finds the right page.

What you put on an ID's page

• You keep ownership of what you write and the photos you upload. You give us permission to store and display them on the ID's page, and to make the copies needed to run the site.
• Only upload what you have the right to share. Don't post anything unlawful, hateful, or anything about a living person they wouldn't want public.
• We may remove content that breaks these terms or that we're legally required to remove.

Payments and refunds

Activations, IDs, starter kits and labels are sold through the Buried in Work shop, which runs on Shopify. The shop's prices, checkout terms and refund policy apply to those purchases. Once an ID has been activated and its page is live, the activation has been delivered.

Providers and other partners

If you take part as a provider, manufacturer or association, the program details you agreed to when you signed up also apply. You're responsible for the accuracy of your organization's details and listing, and for the people you invite into your organization's account. Keep activation codes you hold for families confidential, and give them only to the family the ID is for.

Directory listings

We work to keep listings accurate, but we don't guarantee any provider's availability, qualifications, licensing, pricing or conduct. Being listed isn't an endorsement. Confirm a provider's services and requirements with them directly.

Using the site

• Use the site lawfully and only for its intended purpose.
• Don't try to guess activation codes, reach accounts or IDs that aren't yours, or get into parts of the site you're not meant to.
• Don't disrupt the site, flood it with requests, or scrape it.

Our content

The RetURN.org name, logo, content and design belong to the initiative and its partners. You may not copy or reuse them without permission, except as the law allows.

Disclaimers and limitation of liability

The site is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent the law allows, RetURN.org, Buried in Work and CANA aren't liable for any indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the site or from dealings with a listed provider, and our total liability for anything connected with the site is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Other websites

The site links to other websites, including buriedinwork.com, the Buried in Work shop and provider sites, and shows Buried in Work's directory inside its finder. Those sites have their own terms and privacy policies, and we aren't responsible for them.

Changes

We may update these terms. When we do, we'll change the date at the top, and for a significant change we'll email account holders. Using the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
