Why RetURN.org exists.

The idea took shape at the 2026 CANA Convention. Across the sessions and the hallway conversations, the same story kept surfacing: more and more people are holding a loved one’s cremated remains and don’t know their options: whether they can scatter them, who will receive them, what it costs, or whether it’s even legal. The profession could see the need. What was missing was a single, trustworthy place to send people.

The scale is larger than most people realize. By CANA and Harris Poll estimates, roughly 21.9 million U.S. households hold cremated remains. Cremation now accounts for more than 60% of American deaths, and its share climbs every year. As it grows, so does the number of families left holding an urn with no plan, and, a generation on, the number of people who inherit ashes and never knew what to do with them.

RetURN.org exists to meet that need in two ways. We educate, explaining, plainly, what you can actually do with cremated remains, from scattering and burial to niches, keepsakes and memorials. And, more importantly, we help, connecting people with the funeral homes, cemeteries, crematories and scattering providers who can receive remains and carry those wishes out with care.

Underneath all of it is a simple belief: choosing cremation is a wish that deserves to be honored. When ashes sit forgotten on a closet shelf or in a storage unit, that wish goes unfinished. Helping families complete it, with dignity and without judgment, is the whole point.
